SCDNR Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Internships

S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Internships are posted annually during the fall.  Be on the lookout for new announcements after summer break or during fall 2021. 

The 2020 Internships Opportunities listed below are now closed, however the job descriptions may offer direction or answer questions you may have.

SCDNR FISHERIES MANAGEMENT SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

Number of Positions: 10-14

Location: Various locations in SC. Some potential sites are: Bonneau, Cheraw, Clemson, Columbia, Florence, Rock Hill, and Walhalla, SC. Lodging may be available at some sites. Lodging will not be available at all sites. No pets are allowed in housing areas.

Compensation: Intern will be paid $10/hour and will work 40 hours/week. Employee will have access to a vehicle to be used for work-related travel ONLY. A personal vehicle will be required for commuting and personal transportation.

Duration: 12 weeks, mid-May to mid-August (start/end dates somewhat flexible) 2021.

Description: The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) seeks motivated individuals to participate in a 12-week freshwater fisheries management summer internship in the state. These internships are designed to give real-world experience in the freshwater fisheries field. The intern will assist SCDNR Freshwater Fisheries technicians and biologists with typical field duties. These duties likely will include, but are not limited to, electrofishing, gillnetting, fish propagation, fish stocking, creel surveys, fish passage assessment, habitat improvements, river and stream sampling, fish aging (otoliths), telemetry, hydroacoustics, water quality monitoring, outreach, boat and trailer maintenance. Not all tasks will be performed at every location.

SCDNR freshwater fisheries interns assist with research on South Carolina lakes and rivers.

Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward a degree in fisheries management or closely related field. Recently graduated individuals seeking field experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to clearly and effectively communicate and work independently with little supervision.

Work often will be at remote sites and in harsh conditions. Additionally, knowledge of fisheries biology and management practices is helpful.

Compensation: Interns will be paid $10/hour and will work 40 hours/week. Employees will have access to a vehicle to be used for work-related travel ONLY. A personal vehicle will be required for commuting and personal transportation.

The intern will assist SCDNR Wildlife Management Area and Heritage Preserve staff with wildlife management duties. These duties may include, but are not limited to, planting food plots and dove fields, herbicide application, prescribed burning, wildlife and plant surveys (i.e., black bears, wild turkeys, fox squirrels, red-cockaded woodpeckers, rare plants), feral hog trapping, dove banding, GPS/GIS mapping projects, equipment setup and maintenance, and property maintenance (gates, signs, clean-up, etc.). Not all duties will be performed at all locations.

SCDNR wildlife management interns assist with habitat management and wildlife research.
