If you are a South Carolina college or high school student who enjoys the outdoors, why not enter the 2021 South Carolina Wildlife magazine essay contest? The deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 14th.
The South Carolina Wildlife magazine essay contest, sponsored by Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, aims to feature the best college and high school nature writing. Essays should be nonfiction, with a focus on the outdoors, and between 800 and 1,500 words. The winning essay will be published in South Carolina Wildlife magazine during 2021-22, and the top five essays will be published on SouthCarolinaWild.org. South Carolina Wildlife prize packets will be mailed to the five top-scoring writers.
The annual SCW Essay Contest seeks stories which celebrate South Carolina’s natural resources, have a strong sense of place and use descriptive language. Essays should focus on native species, natural landscapes or nature-related outdoor activities. The contest is open to currently enrolled college and high school students. The SCW Essay Contest is unable to accept simultaneous submissions. SCW only accepts original, unpublished work.
All submissions should be between 800 and 1,500 words, double-spaced and in twelve point Times New Roman font. The header or introduction of your essay should include:
- essay title
- contact information (your name, address, email, phone number)
- the university or high school where you are currently enrolled.
Essay submissions that do not include a title and contact information will not be qualified to compete in the contest. Judges include South Carolina Wildlife magazine staff and a panel of freelance writers.
Submissions or questions should be sent by email to:
SCW magazine Managing Editor, Cindy Thompson, thompsonc@dnr.sc.gov.
The deadline to submit your essay is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 14, 2021.
We look forward to reading your best writing!
