The Diamondback Terrapin

There are many different species of turtles, from the small box turtle to the larger-size softshell turtle. The unique diamondback terrapin prefers brackish water, and it is also a “high priority” species in South Carolina and nearby states.

South Carolina Envirothon: Update

South Carolina Envirothon State Champions – Spartanburg High School A Team – virtually participated in the international National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon Competition during the last week of July 2021. They won 3rd place out of 41 competing teams from United States, Canada and China!

Preparing Vessels for a Traveling Exhibit

During the summer of 2021, S.C. Department of Natural Resources archaeology interns helped to prepare an exciting exhibit of more than three hundred pottery vessels representing different periods in South Carolina history. The exhibit explores the tradition, function and history of these handmade treasures.

Curtain Time

To cast a rod and catch a fish on an evening such as this was to be reminded, in the paraphrased words of my brother Hampton, that though the play of nature and life continues on all around us, for a brief moment I was allowed the privilege of connecting with it through line and lure, joining in the performance.
